Hong Kong is its own hotel-planning market
Hong Kong has its own currency, immigration system and transport network. Hotel rooms can be compact and central rates can be high, but excellent public transportation makes many outlying districts practical.
Choose the MTR line before the hotel
Central, Admiralty, Wan Chai and Causeway Bay are popular on Hong Kong Island. Tsim Sha Tsui, Jordan, Yau Ma Tei and Mong Kok are convenient Kowloon bases. Sha Tin, Tsuen Wan, Tung Chung and other outlying districts can offer different room sizes and prices with direct rail connections.
Octopus is extremely useful
The Hong Kong Tourism Board describes Octopus as an essential travel card for public transport and many everyday purchases. Visitors can use physical or supported mobile versions. MTR, buses, ferries and trams make it possible to stay farther from the main tourist blocks without relying on taxis.

Airport hotel strategy
Hong Kong International Airport is on Lantau Island. The Airport Express provides a fast rail connection to the urban core, while Tung Chung and airport-area hotels can be useful for early flights, AsiaWorld-Expo events or short stopovers.
Cross-border trips
High-speed rail links West Kowloon with numerous mainland destinations. If your trip continues to Shenzhen, Guangzhou or farther into mainland China, make sure your entry status and train booking match the full itinerary.
