Why trains matter for hotel planning
China's high-speed rail network connects many of the country's most popular destinations, often city center to city center. For hotel shoppers, the catch is that large cities may have several railway stations located far apart.
Use the official 12306 English service
China Railway's official English website says foreign passengers can register and purchase real-name tickets using valid foreign passports. Identity verification is required. E-tickets are available, and the passport used for the booking is a key travel document at the station.

Confirm the exact station
“Shanghai” and “Shanghai Hongqiao” are not the same station. Beijing has several major stations. Guangzhou South, Shenzhen North, Chengdu East and many other named stations can be a long ride from older downtown districts. Always search the exact station before booking a hotel marketed as “near the train.”
Station-hotel strategy
- One-night connection: staying near the departure station can be worth more than staying in the sightseeing center.
- Multi-night city break: a metro-connected hotel between the center and station may be a better compromise.
- Early train: verify first-metro times or use a station-area hotel.
- Large luggage: fewer transfers can matter more than saving a small amount on the room.
Popular rail-friendly combinations
Beijing–Xi'an–Shanghai, Shanghai–Suzhou–Hangzhou, Guangzhou–Shenzhen–Hong Kong, Chengdu–Chongqing and Nanjing–Suzhou–Shanghai are examples where rail can simplify a multi-city trip. Timetables and border procedures can change, so check the official schedule for your travel date.
